Cedar Grove Mansion, Ep. 523

Posted on February 1, 2024 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

The city of Vicksburg was indelibly marked by the Civil War. After it surrendered, rumors claimed that the Union pillaged the city. Many of the historic locations there have a spiritual residue because of that fact. One of these places is the Cedar Grove Inn. The inn was not only a residence, but it eventually served as a Civil War hospital and morgue and has had infant deaths and accidental shootings connected to it. The stories of haunting activity at this location are plentiful. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Cedar Grove Inn! The Moment in Oddity features Owl Quidditch and This Month in History features the first publication of The Reader’s Digest. Our location was suggested by Amy Martinez.

Franklin Castle, Ep. 519

Posted on January 4, 2024 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

Cleveland’s Franklin Castle is not really a castle, but is actually a glorious Victorian mansion named for the street upon which it sits. The former Tiedemann residence is cloaked in rumors and innuendo that has lead to it famously being known as “The Most Haunted House in Ohio.” Many people have passed through the doors here from bankers to smugglers to members of the German socialist party, mediums, investigators and priests. Tours and overnight stays are hosted and many guests claim that the moniker of “most haunted” is appropriate. Getting to the truth about this property isn’t easy. Join us for the history and hauntings of Franklin Castle! The Moment in Oddity features The Pando Tree of Utah and This Month in History features the premier of Wheel of Fortune.

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, Ep. 516

Posted on December 14, 2023 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst in Trenton, New Jersey is a very unique military base in that it is the only tri-service base in the United States Department of Defense. All six armed forces branches have units stationed there. The name is derived from the United States Air Force’s McGuire Air Force Base, the United States Army’s Fort Dix and the United States Navy’s Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst. This location was the scene of the horrific crash of the Hindenburg in the 1930s. Several buildings on the base are said to be haunted. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the place most commonly known as Fort Dix! Stick around until the end of the podcast to hear about the Doctor to the Dead of Charleston! The Moment in Oddity features the Montenegro Tree Fountain and This Month in History features the premiere of Playboy Magazine. Our location was suggested by listener Samantha Napier.

Cleveland Grays Armory, Ep. 515

Posted on December 7, 2023 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

Cleveland sits on the opposite side of Lake Erie from Canada. While this proximity is not worrisome to us today, there was a time when Cleveland was worried that Canadians might invade their city. They needed a military group for protection and so they formed one. This group eventually was known as the Cleveland Grays and they built an armory that is today a museum. A haunted one apparently. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of Cleveland Grays Armory! The Moment in Oddity features Roland the Farter and This Month in History was suggested by Chelsea Flowers and features the invention of Liquid Paper.

Mount Washington Hotel, Ep. 507

Posted on October 5, 2023 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

Omni Hotels & Resorts own a long list of haunted hotels and they embrace that reputation. One of their hotels is the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. This is a beautiful location surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest, so it is no wonder that the rich would make this one of their playgrounds. Some of the grandest hotels ever built in America’s history, were built here. Perhaps it is that link to the Gilded Age that has locked in spectres to this establishment. Join us as we share the history and hauntings of the Mount Washington Hotel. The Moment in Oddity features The Hambone Award and This Month in History features the first World Series radio broadcast.

USS Salem, Ep. 502

Posted on August 31, 2023 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

The USS Salem was the flagship of the 6th Fleet and is nicknamed “The Sea Witch.” She was first launched in 1947 as a Naval cruiser and was fortunate to never see any battle. But that didn’t keep her from being linked to death with reports of onboard deaths ranging from 75 to 100. And that has left ghosts on this now floating museum in Quincy, Massachusetts that we had the opportunity to explore when we visited Salem in August of 2022. Join us for the history and hauntings of the USS Salem! The Moment in Oddity features Magnetic Termites and This Month in History features Cy Young’s major league debut. We are joined by Jared Rang who suggested this location!

Hotel del Coronado, Ep. 501

Posted on August 24, 2023 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

There’s no other way to describe the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego other than magnificent. The structure is unique and easily recognizable with its Queen Anne Victorian architecture and white clapboard exterior topped with red turrets. Much has been added to it through the years to modernize it, but the original 1888 hotel still dominates the scene. A beautiful stranger came to stay in 1892 and she was found dead at the hotel. And now that hotel is famously haunted by her spirit. From the hotel, one can see the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which also is apparently haunted. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of Hotel del Coronado. The Moment in Oddity features a gold coin treasure and This Month in History features the Lincoln penny.
