A Dead Cade of History Goes Bump!

Posted on September 30, 2024 by History Goes Bump Posted in Special .

Welcome to our 10th anniversary! On October 1, 2014, the first episode of History Goes Bump dropped. I never imagined that this little hobby I had started up would get to over 8 million downloads, be nominated for awards, get covered in magazines and become another form of income for me. I just hoped my family and friends would listen and enjoy what they heard. But I also hoped that it would become more and get people excited about history and introduce people to some great historical locations. I hope in some small way that I’ve helped to develop your appreciation for historic architecture and inspired you to support the preservation of old buildings. And obviously, I hope that I’ve given you a welcome space for sharing your unexplained experiences and a community to care about you and what happens to your spirit, both here and in the afterlife. That is the greatest reward of all.

We share about some of our favorite episodes, Diane’s dad joins us to share a bit of family lore, we announce some new content coming your way and we share some of our favorite bloopers!

The Life and Afterlife of Karen Carpenter, Ep. 557

Posted on September 26, 2024 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Person .

Karen Carpenter was one half of the Carpenters, a brother and sister singing duo that sold over 150 million records and they had 17 hits. She was an amazing drummer and singer. Her voice had no equal. But despite her amazing talent, she was a tortured soul that suffered from an eating disorder at a time when such a thing was misunderstood and it eventually took her life. And quite possibly that may be why her spirit is at unrest. Join us as we share the history and hauntings of Karen Carpenter. The Moment in Oddity features the Stonehenge Altar Stone and This Month in History features the Panic of 1873.

The mansion is located in Nashville and is now a part of the Belmont University Campus. This is an elaborate antebellum villa that served as a summer respite from the Louisiana heat. And it just might be a respite for Adelicia in the afterlife. Join us for the history and hauntings of the Belmont Mansion. Arlington Resort Hotel and Hot Springs, Ep. 555

Posted on September 12, 2024 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

The Arlington Hotel and Spa has so many ghost stories that are connected to it that it would make more sense for us to tell the listeners that it is located in Haunt Springs rather than Hot Springs, Arkansas. The hotel is located in the heart of downtown Hot Springs and is the third version of the hotel to stand and has been here for 100 years. This is a large and glorious historic hotel that hosted the rich, powerful and famous decades ago. Join us for the history and hauntings of the Arlington Resort Hotel and Spa. The Moment in Oddity features the Ewart Postcard and This Month in History features the discovery of Manhattan Island.

The Hanford Bastille, Ep. 553

Posted on August 29, 2024 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

The Bastille is a former jail that dates back to the Wild West and ran as a jail for nearly 70 years. The building has had many iterations after it closed as a jail. This was an art gallery, a restaurant, a bar and a nightclub. Today, it stands empty and in need of major renovations. This may or may not please the current residents of the building, the ghosts. For years, ghost stories have been told about the building. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Hanford Bastille. The Moment in Oddity features a mummified clown and This Month in History features Lake Nyos exploding.

Haunted Abbeville, South Carolina, E. 552

Posted on August 22, 2024 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

The town of Abbeville in South Carolina is near the Georgia state line and hosted the last war council for Jefferson Davis. The Confederacy died in this town. The tree-lined square hosts many historic buildings and the town itself is filled with Victorian and Gothic styled homes. This all makes Abbeville seem like a quiet little town. But underneath that southern charm are ghost stories. Many buildings here are said to be haunted. Join us for the history and hauntings of the town of Abbeville, South Carolina. The Moment in Oddity features swallowing gum and This Month in History features the birth of Davy Crockett.

USS The Sullivans, Ep. 551

Posted on August 15, 2024 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

USS The Sullivans is berthed now at the Buffalo Naval and Servicemen’s Park in New York. We learned a lot about USS The Sullivans when we toured the USS Yorktown in June 2024. It’s a very different name for a ship and that’s because it was named for five brothers who all died aboard the same ship when it was sunk by a Japanese submarine during World War II. Those brothers just may be haunting their namesake. Or maybe there are other spirits here. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of USS The Sullivans. The Moment in Oddity features the Father of the Marathon and This Month in History features the Klondike Gold Rush. Our location was suggested by Erica Merhoff.

Bellaire Demon House, Ep. 550

Posted on August 8, 2024 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

The Bellaire House has a big reputation and is located in southeastern Ohio in the city for which it is named. The Heatherington family built the house, lived here and died here and are said to haunt it now. But this isn’t just the Bellaire Haunted House. People refer to this as the Bellaire Demon House. The house is said to be plagued with lots of ghostly and demonic activity. Possibly because it sits on a ley line or maybe because a coal mine blew up nearby killing 42 men. Or maybe somebody just opened a bunch of portals. Join us for the history and hauntings of the Bellaire Demon House! The Moment in Oddity features the motorcycle sidecar ambulance and This Month in History features the Voting Rights Act.

The Morris-Jumel Mansion is located in Upper Manhattan in New York City and has stood for over 250 years. This was not only a home for a British Colonel, but also a wealthy American socialite who was the richest woman in America at the time. Today, it is a museum that is reputedly haunted by several spirits, the most prominent one being that socialite. Join us for the history and hauntings of the Morris-Jumel Mansion. The Moment in Oddity features the death of John Shaw and This Month in History features Operation Warsaw Rising. Our location was suggested by Selena Smyth.

Winnipeg’s Hamilton House, Ep. 546

Posted on July 11, 2024 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

Dr. T. G. Hamilton was a trail blazer in the field of Paranormal Research. Hamilton was a medical doctor and because of his experiences with death, he began to wonder if there was a way that we could figure out what happens to us after we die. Hamilton and his family moved into a large home in Winnipeg and it was here that he carried out much of his research, along with his wife. Their children continued the legacy of peering behind the veil. And perhaps that is why the Hamilton House of Winnipeg, Canada is said to be haunted. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of Hamilton House. The Moment in Oddity was suggested by Chelsea Flowers and features reindeer killed by lightning and This Month in History features National Hot Dog Day. Our location was suggested by Kim Bergen.
