Malvern Manor, Ep. 321

Posted on January 2, 2020 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

Malvern is located in Southwest Iowa. This is a really small town similar to most of the small towns we visited in Iowa. Agriculture is the main economy here, but for Malvern, they have a claim to fame that gives them a tourism angle. Malvern Manor is here and is reputedly one of the most haunted buildings in America. This was a former hotel that became a place for the discarded people of society. Could this be why this place has so many spirits locked inside of it today? We got to take a tour of the place and also had the opportunity to do a mini investigation. Join us as we share the history and hauntings of Malvern Manor! The Moment in Oddity features the worst hole of golf ever and This Month in History features Lord Haw Haw executed.

General Dodge House, Ep. 320

Posted on December 26, 2019 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

We visited and investigated several haunted locations while in Iowa and the General Dodge House is one of them. This is one of the most beautiful Victorians I have ever seen. The inside is incredible and the historical society has done a beautiful renovation and upkeep of the structure. And while people probably expect to find interesting accoutrements and antiques inside, they probably don’t expect to run into ghosts. The house is reputedly haunted. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the General Dodge House! The Moment in Oddity features Kitty Cat Gods and This Month in History features Joyce Kilmer Born.

Investigation of the Villisca Ax Murder House, Ep. 310

Posted on October 10, 2019 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

In a quiet neighborhood, just a few blocks away from Villisca’s downtown, stands a very ordinary looking white frame house. The crime that took place here was anything, but ordinary. Six children and two adults would go to sleep on the evening of June 9th in 1912 and never wake up. A neighbor and family member would find the six members of the J.B. Moore family dead, along with Lena and Ina Stillinger. The crime scene was horrific and bloody since all the victims were killed with an axe. The murders were never solved and justice never came. We featured the house back when the podcast first launched in October of 2014 on episode 7. I never imagined that I would eventually visit and tour the house, much less spend an evening sleeping inside. Join myself, Kelly and three listeners on this investigation of the Villisca Axe Murder House. The Moment in Oddity was suggested by Nicole Capps Dixon and features the Boojum of North Carolina and This Month in History features the Veil of Our Lady appearing.

Investigation of the Squirrel Cage Jail, Ep. 308

Posted on September 26, 2019 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

Ep. 308 is up and we take you inside the Squirrel Cage Jail for an investigation! The Squirrel Cage Jail is very unassuming. This is a regular looking historic brick building in the middle of Council Bluffs, Iowa. No one would really know there was a jail inside, save for a few windows with bars in them. A black wrought-iron gate closes off the back of the jail and a colorful statue of a horse decorated with lights stands behind it. We had featured the Squirrel Cage Jail in Ep. 284, but this would be the first time we would actually get to go inside and tour the building. But we did more than just tour this location. This was the inaugural ghost hunt hosted by History Goes Bump and seven listeners joined myself and Kelly as we searched for communication with something from beyond the veil. And we believe we received that. Join me as I share the investigation of the Squirrel Cage Jail in Council Bluffs! The Moment in Oddity was suggested by Chelsea Flowers and features Jacob Miller, a war survivor and This Month in History features the premiere of The Magic Flute.

Squirrel Cage Jail, Ep. 284

Posted on November 29, 2018 by History Goes Bump Posted in Haunted Location .

Old jails just seem to be crawling with spirits as we have come to find from the several jails covered on this podcast. No matter the country, region or city and no matter the size, prisons hold spirits. One incredibly haunted jail can be found in Iowa. Council Bluffs was known as the Great Railroad Center of the Northwest. Before that time, it was a hub for trade between Native American tribes and white settlers. The Squirrel Cage Jail was built here in 1885. This jail has one of the most unique designs of any jail I have ever researched. This prison had a long run, being used until 1969. Today, it offers tours giving a glimpse into penal history and is said to be home to several spirits. Join me as I explore the history and hauntings of the Squirrel Cage Jail. The Moment in Oddity features Old Mike and This Month in History features Architect Stanford White Born. Our location was suggested by Jessica Garcia and Lynne Larsen Savage.
